JEF NEVE
Le pianiste et compositeur belge Jef Neve (1977) obtient en 2000 les diplomes de piano jazz et classique avec grande distinction au « Lemmens Instituut » de Louvain. L’année suivante, il obtint le diplôme de musique de chambre, avec la plus grande distinction.
Depuis, il s’est produit dans des contextes très divers: jazz, musique de chambre, pop (le célèbre ‘boys band’ Get Ready), productions de théâtre ou encore comme soliste, entre autres avec l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Flandres sous la direction de Michael Tilkin.
Il a travaillé durant l’année 2002 comme pianiste et compositeur pour le Contemporary Dance Company ‘Dathe’ à Londres.
Le premier album du Jef Neve Trio, ‘Blue Saga’ (Contour, 2003) a immédiatement enregistré un immense succès en Belgique comme à l’étranger. (par ex. : “Jef Neve a tout d’un grand ! … une sensibilité dans le lyrisme ou dans des tempos d’enfer ne laissant planer aucun doute sur sa véritable identité et son avenir” – Zicline.com)
Le deuxième CD « It’s Gone » (Contour, 2004) a reçu des éloges unanimes dans la presse nationale et internationale ( « It’s Gone is without question one of the best I’ve heard in 2005 » - AllAboutJazz), et a été N°1 des meilleures ventes jazz en Belgique.
L’album a également reçu le prestigieux prix de Radio Klara au titre de ‘Meilleur cd de Jazz International de 2005’.
Jef Neve a signé chez Universal Music Belgium en 2006 et le 3ième album du trio, « Nobody is Illegal », est sorti en novembre ‘06 sur Universal Music/Emarcy. L’album est distribué dans 20 pays et le propulse sur la scène internationale. Le critique anglais Stuart Nicholson écrit : « Son approche hautement personnel du trio de piano annonce l’arrivée d’un jeune musicien qui a le potentiel de devenir une figure majeure sur la scène de jazz européen. Dans une époque où l’art de ‘’consommation rapide’ est devenu la norme, la musique de Jef Neve sera là pour longtemps. »
En France l’album a reçu le CHOC dans Jazzman: « Tout est là : invention dans l’écriture et dans l’art du trio, swing absolu, trouvailles sonores, grands sentiments, humour et vitalité épidemiques. Au jeu des familles et référents, Jef Neve, 30 ans, est hors concours. Retenez bien son nom.”
En Allemagne le magazine ‘MusikAnSich’ le critique Florian Gatz donne le plus haut score « 20 » : « ‘Nobody Is Illegal’ est le meilleur que l’on peut trouver dans le Jazz européen. »
De même au Danemark où il reçoit 5 étoiles dans ‘Politiken’ du critique Boris Rabinowitsch. En Angleterre le ‘Guardian Monthly’ place l’album parmi les meilleurs 5 nouveautés (à coté de Norah Jones).
Le 4ième album « Soul in a Picture » est sorti Mai 2008 sur Universal Music Belgium suivi de sorties mondiales dans 24 pays. L’album a reçu de superbes critiques dans la presse internationale. JazzMan : «Spectaculaire. Son précédent album avait enflammé la critique et s'était vu couronné d'un ‘Choc’ Jazzman. “Soul in a Picture” enfonce le clou et confirme tous nos espoirs. »

le Trio s’est produit lors de festivals internationaux comme Veneto Jazz (Italie), Vancouver Jazz festival, Montreal jazz festival, North Sea Jazz, Jazz Fest Wien, Rabat Jazz (Maroc), Athens Jazz festival, Paris Jazz Festival, Europjazz/Mexico, Blue Note Records Festival, et au Middelheim Jazz Festival c’est la consécration, le Trio est ovationné debout par un public de plus de 3000 personnes, et la presse cite leur concert comme un des points forts du festival, à côté de Toots Thielemans et Ornette Coleman. En automne 2007 Jef Neve s’est produit en solo devant une salle comble au festival réputé « Piano au Jacobins » à Toulouse. Le Trio a donné deux concerts mémorables au London Jazz festival enregistré également par le BBC, au Popkomm à Berlin, au Festival Jazz en Nord à Lille, à Barcelone, etc.
2008 fut marqué par un grand succès en Allemagne lors du ‘Jazz Inbetween’ à Munster, une tournée au Japon, où le trio a également enregistré un titre avec l’artiste japonais TOKU pour l’édition japonaise de leur prochain album, ainsi que des concerts en Espagne, en Hongrie, au Veneto Jazz en Italie, une tournée au Mexique, des concerts en Angleterre, festivals de Madrid et Vitoria-Gasteiz.. En 2009 des concerts au Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Allemagne, Norvège, France, Japon, Mexique, Républic Tchèque, tournée en Pologne ..
Le mélange de virtuosité et intériorité allié à de sublimes compositions, l’homogénéité du trio, (ensemble depuis plus de six ans) et cette joie jubilatoire très communicative lors de leurs concerts, forment sans aucun doute les clés de leur succès.
Après le concert à Bremen ‘JazzAhead’ 08, Jazz.com écrit : « But it was Jef Neve from Belgium who took Jazzahead! by storm. It earned the loudest ovation of the whole event as everyone sensed the arrival of a major talent. »
Le nouveau CD du Jef Neve Trio sortira début Septembre 2010 sur Universal Music.
COLLABORATIONS. A part ses concerts avec son trio et en solo, Jef Neve est actif dans des divers projets :
* L’album « Face to Face » avec le vibraphoniste Luxembourgeois Pascal Schumacher, est paru en janvier 2010 (Enja Records), avec une tournée ‘Rising Stars’ de douze concerts dans les salles classiques européennes.
* La rencontre de Jef Neve et le chanteur américain José James lors d’un concert en Novembre 2008 a emmené les deux artistes à enregistrer sur une après-midi quelques standards, juste pour le plaisir. L’enregistrement fut magique, et l’album « For All We Know » sort en Mai 2010 sur Impulse!/Verve, suivi d’une tournée mondiale.
* En quartet José et Jef ont monté le projet « Facing East – the music of John Coltrane » qu’ils ont présenté en Septembre 2009 à Bruxelles, Londres, Paris et Amsterdam.
* Le groupe ‘Groove Thing’ dans lequel on retrouve Jef Neve à l’orgue Hammond, a enregistré un album ‘live’ lors de deux concerts sold-out à l’ancienne Belgique à Bruxelles le 1er et 2 Avril 2009, qui sortira début 2010 (Prova records).
* Suite au succès de leur tournée en 2008, le chanteur Gabriel Rios a invité Jef Neve à travailler ensemble sur la musique pour son nouvel album, qui sortira en Mars 2010.
CLASSIQUE. Jef Neve reste également actif dans le monde de la musique classique :
* Durant l’année 2005 il a préparé les Variations de Goldberg de J.S. Bach, qu’il a interprété lors d’une série de concerts la saison suivante.
* Il donne régulièrement des concerts en duo avec le hoboïste Piet Van Bockstal dans un programme d’œuvres contemporaines et compositions personelles.
* En 2007 il s’est produit avec le Royal Flemish Philharmonic dans un programme Gershwin, ainsi qu’en Mai 2009 à la Salle Reine Elisabeth et à ‘De Roma’ à Anvers devant des salles combles.
Avec le jeune pianiste Liebrecht Van Beckevoort il prépare un programme qu’ils présenteront la saison prochaine.
* Jef Neve écrit son premier Concerto pour piano et orchestre en 2007/08, qu’il a interpreté en première mondiale le 1er et 2 Mai 2009 à Bruxelles et au à Gand avec le Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra sous la direction de Michel Tabachnik. Salles complets et ovations debout.
* Sur la demande du chœur de la VRO il a composé une oeuvre pour choeur sur le texte d’Agnus Dei, qui sera présenté lors d’une dizaine de concerts début 2010.
CINEMA. Jef Neve a composé la musique pour le film du cinéaste belge Félix Van Groeningen, « Dagen zonder Lief », sorti en Mars 2007. Le film a connu un grand succès, a reçu plusieurs prix et est sorti dans de nombreux pays. Dans la presse la musique est citée comme étant l’un des points forts du film, et Jef Neve était invité au « World Soundtrack Awards » 2007 pour y interpréter la musique dans un arrangement pour piano et orchestre. Il a également écrit la musique du dernier film de Van Groeningen « The Misfortunates» (« La merditude des Chöses »), qui a été décerné au festivals de film de Cannes et de Toronto, et a reçu 3 awards au 'Hamptons International Film Festival' de New York.
La musique des deux films est sorti sur CD en Novembre 2009 (Universal).
RADIO. Jef Neve a été demandé par la radio nationale belge, VRT-Radio Klara, de présenter un programme hebdomadaire autour du jazz. Depuis janvier 2008 l’émission ‘Neve’ (enregistré ‘live’) s’écoute le vendredi soir de 19h à 21h et est devenu le programme le plus écouté de cette chaine.
PRIX. Jef Neve fut nominé pour les ‘ZAMU Awards 2004’ et 2005, pour les ‘Cultuurprijzen Vlaanderen 2005’ , ainsi que les ‘Octaves de la Musique 2005’ . Il a reçu le ZAMU Awards ‘Jazz’ 2006 et a été élu ‘Best Musician’ lors des Music Industry Awards 2009 ainsi qu’en janvier 2010.
Ruben Samama (1985),Born in 1985, New York based bass-player Ruben Samama started to play and write music from the age of 12. Born into a musical family, as the son of a flautist and a
composer, Ruben grew up with music all around him, “ I always wanted to make music
and I don’t think I ever considered any other future profession, it just happened, music
was a natural thing for me to do, the only question was: ‘What kind of music?’ this was
solved soon enough when I found out ‘All kinds of music’. Because of this, improvisation
seemed to be the best vehicle for blending and mixing all the musical styles I loved.”
Teun Verbruggen (1975) Teun Verbruggen (1975) obtient en 1999 le diplôme de ‘Master in Music/jazz’ au Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles chez Hans Van Oosterhout. Il a étudié auprès de Dré Pallemaerts et John Engels. A côté du trio de Jef Neve, il joue avec son propre trio ‘Othin Spake’ (avec le guitariste Mauro Pavlowski de DeUs), ‘Futhark’ et ‘Nozzle Slag’ et ‘Gowk’. En tant que sideman il s’est produit avec grand nombre d’artistes et a enregistré avec le Jef Neve trio, Alexi Tuomarila Quartet, F.E.S, Peter Jones, Kevin Armstrong (Iggy Pop), Arif Duirvesch (Nittin Shawhney), Lithon, etc.. Teun Verbruggen a crée son propre label ‘Rat Records’.

Pianist-componist Jef Neve (1977) behaalde in 2000 aan het Leuvense Lemmensinstituut met grote onderscheiding de diploma’s Meester in de Muziek/Jazz en Meester in de Muziek/Klassiek, en het jaar daarop een diploma Specialisatie in Kamermuziek met grootste onderscheiding. Masterclasses volgde hij onder meer bij Brad Mehldau, Martial Solal, Lew Tabackin, Billy Hart, Bill Carothers, Kenny Werner en Bruce Barth.
Jef Neve begon op zijn 14e op te treden met locale bands. Hij componeerde ook werken voor zeer verschillende bezettingen (van solo piano tot symfonisch orkest). Vanaf zijn 17e tot zijn 20e speelde hij met de populaire funkband Mr. Zebedee. In 2002 werkte hij een jaar als pianist en componist voor de Contemporary Dance Company ‘Dathe’ in Londen.
De eerste jaren speelde Jef als freelance pianist met zeer uiteenlopende ensmbles : klassieke ensembles, pop bands zoals Get Ready, theater producties, en als solist met onder meer het Filharmonisch Orkest van Vlaanderen o.l.v. Michel Tilkin. Jef Neve maakt tevens deel uit van het ‘Pascal Schumacher/Jef Neve Quartet’, met wie hij twee cds opnam, en de eerste prijs won op ‘Tremplin Jazz’ in Avignon in 2004.
'Blue Saga', de debuut-cd van het Jef Neve Trio, werd zowel in binnen- als buitenland enthousiast ontvangen, en werd ook nog eens één van de best verkochte jazz-cd's van 2003.
Zijn tweede trio-cd “It’s Gone”verscheen begin november 2004, stond maandenlang nr.1 best verkocht jazzalbum in België, en ontving schitterende kritieken in binnen- en buitenland.

In 2006 tekent Jef Neve bij Universal Music Belgium en zijn derde CD, “Nobody is Illegal” werd in November dat jaar gereleased. De recensies zijn unaniem enthousiast, ook in het buitenland, en steeds meer Universal firma’s wereldwijd besluiten de cd uit te brengen, nu in een 20-tal landen.
In frankrijk ontving de cd o.a. de ‘CHOC’ van het franse magazine Jazzman en werd verkozen tot een van de beste vijf cd’s in ‘The Guardian Monthly’. De Engelse jazzjournalist Stuart Nicholson schreef : "On his major label debut ‘Nobody Is Illegal’ his highly personal approach to the piano trio announces the arrival of a young musician of enormous promise who has the potential to become a major voice on the European jazz scene." En het Duitse magazine ‘MusikAnSich’ gaf de hoogste score 20 : « ‘Nobody is illegal“ heißt das Werk. Umfasst elf Titel und gehört für mich zu dem Besten, was die europäische Jazzszene derzeit zu bieten hat. »
Het vierde album ‘Soul In A Picture’ van het Jef Neve Trio kwam in Mei 2008 uit op Universal Music Belgium. De CD werd in de loop van 2008 in een 24-tal landen gereleased en kreeg lovende recensies in de internationale pers. Onder andere :

Het Jef Neve Trio trad op tijdens festivals als Paris Jazz, North Sea jazz, Vienna Jazz, Montreal Jazz Festival, Vancouver Jazz, Veneto Jazz/Italië, London Jazz Festival, Blue Note Gent, Athene, Jazz Middelheim, Piano au Jacobins/Toulouse, Barcelona, Münster 'Jazz Inbetween', Rabat, Lille Festival, Frysk Festival/Leeuwarden, Audi Jazz, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Madrid, Berlin Jazzmeeting, etc... In 2008 kreeg het trio grote bijval op Bremen JazzAhead, in Spanje en hun eerste optredens in Japan waar ze tevens een nummer opnamen met de trompettist TOKU voor de Japanse release van de nieuwe cd. Ze gaven hun eerste concert in Hongarije en een voor de tweede tour in Mexico met concerten in Monterrey in de twee grote theaters voor 1700 mensen en op het festival in Mexico city voor 4000 man met staande ovatie, evenals in England, Frankrijk, Duitsland, Nederland, Spanje en Italië. In 2009 concerten in het Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Polen, Noorwegen, Denmarken, Duitsland, Spanje, Frankrijk, Japan, Mexico, enz..
De bijna perfecte balans tussen virtuositeit en diepgang, sublieme composities, hecht samenspel, een goede dosis humor en zeer aanstekelijk speelpezier tijdens de concerten zijn zonder twijfel de sleutel van het succes dat dit trio overal kent.
Na het optreden op Bremen JazzAhead in april 2008, schreef Jazz.com : « But it was Jef Neve from Belgium who took Jazzahead! by storm. It earned the loudest ovation of the whole event as everyone sensed the arrival of a major talent. »
In September 2010 verschijnt het nieuwe langverwachtte album van het Trio (Universal), met Teun Verbruggen op drums en de jonge talentvolle Nederlandse contrabassist Ruben Samama.
Naast zijn jazz-trio en soloconcerten is Jef Neve ook actief in een aantal andere projecten.
Bij de band ‘Groove Thing’, met Nicolas Kummert op sax, Nic Thys op bas en Lieven Venken op drums, speelt Jef Neve Hammond B3. Ze traden oa op tijdens Jazz Middelheim ’08 met groot succes, en in April 2009 werd een live-cd opgenomen in de Ancienne Belgique te Brussel, die zal verschijnen in de lente 2010.
De samenwerking met Gabriel Rios en Kobe Proesmans zorgde voor een serie mooie optredens gedurende 2008 die werd afgesloten met een uitverkocht concert in de AB te Brussel op 15 Oktober. Rios vroeg Jef Neve opnieuw mee te werken aan composities voor een nieuwe plaat die in 2010 zal verschijnen.
Van het Duo met vibrafonist Pascal Schumacher wordt een cd gereleased in Januari 2010 op Enja Records, gevolgd door een ‘Rising Star Tour’ langs een twaalftal belangrijke Europese zalen.
In November 2008 speelde Jef Neve met de Amerikaanse zanger Jose James een concert in de AB/Brussel, wat bij beide muzikanten zo in de smaak viel dat ze de dag nadien de studio introkken om in duo een aantal standards op te nemen. Het werd een van die magische momenten waarbij elke eerste take meteen raak is. De opnames kregen positieve respons bij het label Verve, en het album “For All We Know” zal wereldwijd wordden greleased in Mei 2010 op Impulse!/Verve.
Dat eerste concert mondde ook uit op een samenwerking voor een ander project “Facing East – the music of John Coltrane’ waarmee ze samen met de Amerikaanse saxofonist/fluitist Michael Campagna, bassist Neville Malcolm en drummer Richard Spaven vier sublieme concerten gaven eind September 2009 in de AB/Brussel, Paradiso/Amsterdam, Ronnnie Scott’s/Londen en New Morning/Parijs, overal laaiend enthousiast onthaald door publiek en pers.
Ook in de klassieke muziek blijft Jef Neve actief. In 2005 werkte hij aan de Goldberg Variaties van J.S. Bach, die hij tijdens 2006 en 2007 verschillende malen heeft uitgevoerd. Hij geeft als solist regelmatig concerten met orkest, o.a. met de Flanders Philharmonic in een Gershwin programma. Tijdens 2008 gaf hij met zanger Koen Vereertbrugghen verschillende concerten in een programma van de ‘Dichterliebe’ van Schumann, composities van Menotti, Barber en Britten, en met hoboïst Piet Van Bockstal vormt hij sinds enkele jaren een duo dat zowel composities van hedendaagse componisten als eigen werkt brengt.
In de zomer van 2007 kreeg hij een compositieopdracht van het Muziekcentrum De Bijloke in Gent, waarvoor hij zijn 1e Pianoconcerto heeft geschreven. Dit werd op 1 en 2 Mei 2009 in wereldpremière uitgevoerd met het Brussels Philharmonic o.l.v. Michel Tabachnik, in de Bijloke te Gent en in Flagey te Brussel voor uitverkochte zalen. De versie hiervan voor twee piano’s is ondertussen een eigen leven gaan leiden en werd samen met pianist Alexander Gurning reeds verscheidene malen uitgevoerd.
Van het VRK (Vlaams Radio Koor) kreeg hij een compositieopdracht voor een werk voor koor en piano dat begin 2010 werd uitgevoerd in een tien-tal zalen in België.
Tevens vormt Jef Neve een duo met hoboist Piet Van Bockstal, en ook met pianist Liebrecht Vanbeckevoort is een project ‘klassiek & jazz’ in voorbereiding voor concerten begin 2011.
Jef Neve componeerde de muziek voor de film ‘Dagen Zonder Lief’ van cineast Felix Van Groeningen, die in 2007 in de zalen verscheen en schitterende kritieken ontving waarin onder andere de soundtrack als een van de sterke punten wordt genoemd. Hij werd uitgenodigd om tijdens de ‘World Soundtrack Awards’ 2007 een suite van de soundtrack uit te voeren in arrangement voor orkest en piano. De Film werd tevens verkozen voor de ‘European Film Awards’ in Berlijn.
Voor de nieuwe film van Felix Van Groeningen, ‘De Helaasheid der Dingen’ (‘The Misfortunates’) die in October 2009 in première ging schreef Jef Neve opnieuw de muziek. De film werd geselecteerd voor het Filmfestival in Cannes en in Toronto, en is driemaal in de prijzen gevallen op het 'The Hamptons International Film Festival' in New York.
Jef Neve ontving de Radio Klara Prijs voor ‘Beste jazz cd van 2005’ , werd genomineerd in de categorie ‘beste artiest’ voor de ZAMU AWARDS 2004 en opnieuw in 2005, evenals voor de Cultuurprijzen Vlaanderen 2005 in categorie ‘muziek’ (naast Tom Barman/DeUs en Capilla Flamenca), en voor de ‘Octaves de la Musique 2005’ in de categorie ‘jazz’. In 2007 ontving hij de ZAMU AWARD ‘Jazz’, in 2009 werd hij verkozen als ‘beste muzikant’’ bij de Music Industry Awards (MIA’s), Tevens kreeg hij in Juni 2009 de prijs Eugène Baie uitgereikt. Op 8/1/2010 werd Jef Neve opnieuw verkozen als beste muzikant bij de Music Industry Awards.
De VRT-Radio Klara vroeg Jef Neve om een radioprogramma te verzorgen rond jazz, en sinds Januari 2008 is elke vrijdag van 19 tot 21 uur ‘Neve’ te horen op deze zender. Het is ondertussen een van de meest beluisterde programma’s van Klara.

Teun heeft zijn eigen label ‘Rat Records’. Hij geeft eveneens les aan het Conservatorium van Antwerpen.

Young pianist/composer Jef Neve (1977) has become a prominent figure in his homeland Belgium and his reputation is rapidly spreading to the rest of the world.
He studied at the Lemmensinstituut in Louvain and graduated in 2000 with Master of Music degrees in Jazz and classical piano, both with great distinction. In 2001 he specialized in Chamber Music and was rewarded 'cum laude'. Next to his musical education, Jef started to play in local bands at the age of fourteen. During that period he composed a wide variety of pieces for the most divergent ensembles (from piano solo to symphonic orchestra).
At seventeen he played with the popular funk band Mr. Zebedee, followed collaborations with various jazz bands, classical ensembles, pop bands (f.ex. ‘Get Ready’, the famous Belgian boys band), theatre productions, and solo performances with the Flemish Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Michel Tilkin.

Jef Neve signed with Universal Music Belgium, and the third album, “Nobody is Illegal” (2006) was again best selling jazz album in Belgium and reviews superlative (for ex.: “On his major label debut ‘Nobody Is Illegal’ his highly personal approach to the piano trio announces the arrival of a young musician of enormous promise who has the potential to become a major voice on the European jazz scene” - Stuart Nicholson, 12/06). Universal Music companies world wide reacted equally enthusiastic and the CD was released in 20 countries. In FRANCE the album received the "CHOC" in the magazine 'Jazzman'. In DENMARK it received 5-stars in ‘Politiken’ by Boris Rabinowitsch: "Klaverfænomen." In the UK the 'Guardian Monthly' ranked it among "5 best new albums", the cd received 4-stars in 'Times2' and in the 'Evening Standard'. 'The Observer' wrote : "His concerts are almost like a religious experience, riveting audiences by the sheer power and imagination of his playing." In GERMANY the magazine 'MusikAnSich.de' gave the highest quote “20” : "Nobody Is Illegal belongs to the best that you can find in the European Jazz. For jazz, classical or simply music lovers : this album is a must from beginning to end." In ITALY the critic Roberto de Vitris wrote in 'Altrisuoni': "Jef Neve è l'uomo nuovo del piano jazz internazionale". In IRELAND the 'Irish Times' wrote : "Jef Neve is leading a new wave of European Jazz."
The fourth album “Soul In a Picture” was released in May 2008 on Universal Music Belgium followed by world wide release in 24 countries. The trio’s concerts were sold out at all the main belgian venues ranging from 600 to 1000 people in Brussels, Anwerp, Gent, Leuven, Turnhout, Hasselt, followed by a series of concerts in the smaller towns as well as abroad, and the CD and concerts gets great reviews in the press all over the world.

The Trio performed at major festivals like Paris Jazz, North Sea jazz, Vienna Jazz, Montreal Jazz Festival, Vancouver Jazz, Veneto Jazz, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Madrid, Barcelona, London Jazz Festival, Toulouse, Münster 'Jazz Inbetween', Lille Festival, Audi Jazz, Blue Note Gent, Mexico, Berlin, Athens, Middelheim, Rabat. In 2008 the trio had great success at Bremen JazzAhead and their first shows in Japan, where they also recorded a piece with great artist TOKU for the Japanese release of the new album. The trio played their first concert in Hungary and were invited for a second tour in Mexico, where they played in Monterrey at the two main theatres and in Mexico city festival with standing ovations, as well as in England, Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Holland. In 2009 they performed at the prestigious Concertgebouw Amsterdam, and toured in Spain, Norway, Denmark, Germany, the UK, Poland, Czech Republic, France..
The outstanding musicianship combined with fine-tuned interactivity and visible joy while playing is very communicative and makes an event of each concert. After the Trio’s concert at Bremen JazzAhead Jazz.com wrote : « But it was Jef Neve from Belgium who took Jazzahead! by storm. It earned the loudest ovation of the whole event as everyone sensed the arrival of a major talent. »
In Downbeat Magazine James Hale wrote about the Vitoria-Gasteiz Festival : «young Belgian pianist Jef Neve's enthusiastic performance with his trio in the Teatro Principal was a festival standout. »
Jef Neve is preparing his new trio-album to be released in September 2010 (Universal Music Belgium) and worldwide releases the following months, with drummer Teun Verbruggen and on double bass Ruben Samama.
The duo album with vibraphone player Pascal Schumacher’s « Face to Face » was released January 2010 on Enja records, followed by a ‘Rising Star’ tour through a dozen European classical venues.
Jef Neve met with American singer José James at a concert end 2008 and the duo decided on the spot to record some standards together one free afternoon. The recording resulted to be magical, and the album « For All We Know » will be released in May 2010 on Impulse!/Verve, followed by a world tour starting June 2010.
José’s band and Jef also gave four exceptional concerts with their project « Facing East - The Music of John Coltrane » in Brussels, Amsterdam, London and Paris with great acclaim from both public and press.
After the sucessful tour they did together in 2008, singer-songwriter Gabriel Rios has invited Jef Neve to work together on the music for his new album which will come out in March 2010.
With the band ‘Groove Thing’, with Nicolas Kummert on sax, Nic Thys on bass and Lieven Venken on drums, Jef goes back to his first love, the Hammond organ. The band recorded a live-album at two sold-out concerts in Brussels’ Ancienne Belgique and will be released in April 2010.
Parallel to his fast growing activity as jazz artist, Jef Neve stays active in the classical scene:
He prepared the Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach during 2005, which he performed several times the next season. In 2008 he gave several concerts with Belgian tenor Koen Vereertbrugghen, and since a few years he also regularly performs in Duo with oboist Piet Van Bockstal.
His first piano concerto, which was comisioned by the Bijloke Muziekcentrum, was be premiered on 1st and 2nd of May 2009 in Brussels and Ghent , together with the Brussels Philharmonic conducted by Michel Tabachnik, for sold-out venues and received standing ovations.
He was invited by the Flanders Philharmonic to play a Gershwin program in 2007 and again in May 2009 for two concerts conducted by Takuo Yuasa at ‘De Roma’ and the Queen Elisabeth Hall in Antwerp.
The Brussels Philharmonic has comissioned a piece for choir, piano and orchestra, which will be performed in a series of ten concerts in january and February 2010.
Jef Neve wrote the sound track for the film ‘Dagen Zonder Lief’ (2007) by Belgian film director Felix Van Groeningen. Critics mentioned the sound track as being one of the strong points of the movie, and Jef was invited to perform extracts from the score at the “World Soundtrack Awards 2008”.
He composed the sound track for the new film ‘The Misfortunates’ by Van Groeningen, which was awarded at film festivals in Cannes ,Toronto, and just received 3 awards at 'The Hamptons International Film Festival' in New York.
A cd of the sound-tracks was released on Universal Music Belgium in November 2009.
Jef Neve was asked by the National Belgian Radio VRT-Klara to do a weekly jazz program. Since January 2008 the program “Neve”, recorded live, is broadcast every Friday night and has become the radio’s most popular program.
Jef Neve was nominated for several prizes: the ZAMU Awards 2004 and 2005 in the category ‘best artist’; the ‘Cultuurprijzen Vlaanderen 2005’ in the category ‘music’ (next to Tom Barman/DeUs and Capilla Flamenca), and the ‘Octaves de la Musique 2005’. In 2007 he received the ZAMU Award Jazz, and he received the award ‘best musician’ at the Music Industry Awards both in 2009 and 2010.
Ruben Samama (1985),Born in 1985, New York based bass-player Ruben Samama started to play and write music from the age of 12. Born into a musical family, as the son of a flautist and a
composer, Ruben grew up with music all around him, “ I always wanted to make music
and I don’t think I ever considered any other future profession, it just happened, music
was a natural thing for me to do, the only question was: ‘What kind of music?’ this was
solved soon enough when I found out ‘All kinds of music’. Because of this, improvisation
seemed to be the best vehicle for blending and mixing all the musical styles I loved.”
Teun Verbruggen (1975) graduated in 1999 as ‘Master in Music/jazz’ at the Music Conservatory of Brussels with Hans Van Oosterhout. He followed lessons with Dré Pallemaerts and John Engels. Besides this trio he plays with his own projects ‘Othin Spake’, ‘Futhark’, ‘Nozzle Slag’ and ‘Gowk’. As a sideman he played with innumerable artists, and recorded with Alexi Tuomarila Quartet, F.E.S., Peter Jones, Jef Neve trio, Kevin Armstrong (Iggy Pop), Arif Duirvesch (Nittin Shawhney), Lithon, etc.. He has his own record label ‘Rat Records’.

En solo unos años, el joven pianista belga JEF NEVE (1977) se ha establecido como uno de los mejores artistas de jazz en su país, y su reputación se reconoce también en el resto de Europa.
Jef Neve nació en Turnhout, Bélgica, en 1977. Estudió en el Lemmensinstituut en Lovaina y tomó clases maestras con Guy de Mey, Brad Mehldau, Toots Thielemans, entre otros. En 2000 se graduó con el grado de Maestro en Música en las especialidades de jazz y piano.
En 2001 se especializó en música de cámara, obteniendo el grado « cum laude ». Junto con su educación musical, comenzó a integrarse con bandas de jazz desde los catorce años.
Su primer disco « Blue Saga » salió en 2001 con excelentes críticas y su segundo album "It's Gone" (11/2004) es el disco más vendido dentro del género de jazz en Bélgica y acaba de recibir el prestigioso Premio de Radio Klara como 'Mejor CD Jazz Internacional de 2005".
Paralelo a sus conciertos internacionales, Neve prepara un programa clásico para este año donde interpreta las « Variaciones Goldberg » de Bach.
El Jef Neve Trio ha actuado en festivales como Athens International Jazz Fetsival, Blue Note Festival Gent, Festival van Vlaanderen, Jazz Middelheim, Audi Jazz Festival, etc. En 2006 el trío tiene numerosos conciertos en Bélgica, y también a Ámsterdam, Paris, Madrid, Festival de Jazz en Nord (Francia), Festival Int. de Wiltz (Luxemburgo), EuroJazz Festival/Mexico, una gira en Japón, etc... Si hay que definir porque este trío tiene tanto excito con el publico, será sin duda por su homogeneidad excepcional, unas composiciones virtuosas pero también profundas y líricas, junto a un entusiasmo y sentido de humor muy comunicativa. Jef Neve acaba de firmar con UNIVERSAL records, y el proximo disco del Jef Neve Trio saldrá en Noviembre 2006.
Un articulo en el famoso AllAboutJazz.com (Sep.29, 2005) escribe: "De Belgica viene Jef Neve, un pianista explosivamente dotado, cuyo secundo album "It's Gone" es sin duda el mejor que he escuchado en 2005".
